Abstract : Phenylacetonitrile can be condensed with N-substituted-bis(2-chloroethyl)amines in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to produce N-substituted-4-cyano-4-phenylpiperidines. Hexadecyltributylphosphonium bromide is an effective catalyst for this phase-transfer reaction.
