Abstract : Sevcral tricyanovinyl dyes were preparcd via the inleraction of tetracyanoethylene and the appropriatc anilines with or \Vithout olvent. Thc soJvent U ed is dimethylfonnamide, and the optil11ul11 tempcraturc is in the rangc of 70-90 0c. Changing the anilinc coupler causes change in the strength of the donor group and hence rcmarkabJe efTect on the absorption maximum \Vas observed. The solvatochromism of the synthesized dyes \Vere inve tigated in difTercnl soJvents. the maximuITI absorption of thc dycs \Vcrc found to be red shiftcd in more polar .oJvcnts. The thermal stability of the dye was asscsscd on polyethyJenc film at J 00 0c. and some of the dye sho\Ved exceJlcnt thcnnaJ stabiJity.
