ln recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in transplanting the pancreatic islets for Ibe treatmant of diabetes mellitus. SeveraJ transplantation sites have previously been examined such as intrahepatic (Kemp et al., 1973·a & 1973·b; I)ipeleers et al., 1975; Alejandro et aJ., 1986; Warnock and Rajotte, 1988; Hiller and Klempnauer, ) 989; Scharp et al., 1992; Van Suylichem et aI., 1994), intrtlsplenic (Warnock et al., 1983; Hesse ct aI., 1986; Scharp et al., 1992; Van Suylichem et al., J994) and renal subcapsular (Reece-Smith et al., 1981; Toledo-Pereyra et at, 1984; Arniel et al.. 1987; Mendola et al.,1994). Such studies used Sites requiring an invasive operative procedure; however an easily accessible and suitable site for transplantation of me pancreatic islets has yet to be determined.
lbe present study wao; iniliatcd to investigate the sujtability of the tongue as a site for transplanting tbe pancreatic islets in strcpto1.olocin-diabcuc rats and to delCnnine the ability of the islets to survive and functioll. The longue was selected as a U"ansplantalion site in view of itS Ocillg a highly vascularized organ tbat can provide the implanted islet. with a rich blood supply needed for their survival and noma! fUllction.
