Abstract : this papers explores the economic thought of a medieval arab- islamic scholastic shams aldin abu abdullah muhammed bin abi bakr al-zar،i known as ibn al-qayyim al jawziyyah (691-751/1292-1350D) here after called ibn qayyim as a the ologian and interpreter of islamic scriptures he was among the leading jurists of the hanbali school last of the four sterams within islamic shariah or islamic jurisprudence that emerged between the eighth and fourtheenth centuries (the other three chronologically being hanafi maliki and shafi each named arab islamic scholarship who wrote an a variety of specific economic issuse - some even wrote separate treatises (see for example abu yusuf 731 - 798 ad : al - farabi < 870-950ad and nasir al-din tusi1201-1274ad th the best of our knowledge none of ibn qayyims works has been translated into english or other european languages the present paper relies primarily on the origninal arabic language source . it need to be pointed out however that there is hardly any arab islamic scholar whoise economic thought is familiair in the profession or incorporated by some english language literature on the economics of a late medieval arab islamic scholar ibn khaldun (1332-1404) about twenty - five years ago the late joseph spengler wrote an excellent papers on this scholar and in referring to arab - islam litterature of the era he observed that the knowledge of economic behavior in some circale was very great indeed and one must turn to the writting of those with access to this knowledge and experience if one would know the actual state of muslim economic knowledage (spengler 1964-304) thus part of the stimulus for the persent effort comes from spenglers suggestion further it might be noted that another scholar also writing on ibn lhaldun referred to him as among the fathers of economic science
